White House says Joe Biden has read Brittney Griner’s letter, mum on potential talks with WNBA star’s family

Brittney Griner’s harmless return home continues to be “a precedence” for President Joe Biden, but White Residence push secretary Karine Jean-Pierre could not say Tuesday if the president experienced any designs of talking with the WNBA star’s family. 

Griner sent a letter to the White House on Monday pleading with Biden to use his presidential powers to guarantee her safe and sound return, including that she fears that she “might be listed here endlessly.”

Jean-Pierre verified through Tuesday’s press briefing that the president did read the letter but declined to remark on if Biden experienced any strategies to communicate with Griner’s spouse and children directly.

“This is an problem that is a precedence for this president. As you have heard us say right before, he thinks that any U.S. nationwide that is held abroad or detained or held hostage overseas — we need to convey back again safely, and we are going to use each individual instrument that we perhaps can to make that transpire. All over again, this is a priority for the president.”

“I just you should not have something to share on what interaction the president’s going to have with Mrs. Griner and her loved ones,” she afterwards extra. “All I can confirm is that he’s go through the letter, and he’s building this a priority.”

Jean-Pierre, who reiterated that Griner is being “wrongfully detained,” said that Griner’s spouse and family are in “frequent conversation” with the White House, most recently with national safety adviser Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State Antony Blinken. 

“The president’s heading to do every little thing that he can in his electric power to provide her residence, together with other U.S. nationals who are becoming held wrongfully detained aboard,” Jean-Pierre explained.

Griner is in the center of a trial that commenced Friday to ascertain her fate. Much less than 1% of defendants in Russian legal instances are acquitted, and, not like in U.S. courts, acquittals can be overturned.
